Google’s Chat Big Fix with RCS for Android Messaging: A New Competition to Apple iMessage
Google is coming up with a new chat service as a substitute for standard texting. It is a move, which will provide Android users with advanced features that are found in various popular chat services. Such as Apple’s iMessage, Facebook, WhatsApp, etc.
What’s New on Google Chat Message ?
Google Chat is completely based upon RCS, or Rich Communication Services, which is a new standard for the SMS texts. The bunch of carriers, as well as device makers, already have the support of RCS messaging. And now, Google is working with all to come up with RCS to Android as a Chat. Apple is particularly absent from that whole list. It will be surprising if it agrees to support the RCS going forward, provided its stance on the user data privacy as well as security.
As the Chat will work through the infrastructure of mobile operators that are more open in giving usage to text messaging records to the police, it will not be any end-to-end encrypted. One other significant reason for not encrypting messages is Google’s own requirements. Google Assistant has to complete work inside the Chat application, and it means the need to see messages that are swapped in it. It is just like Allo, the earlier iMessage alternative from Google.
One reason for the carriers to hate iMessage is that it does not give any sort of revenue to them. These texts are sent via the internet between the iOS devices therefore, carriers cannot tax them. You pay for data, but iMessage is one mobile chat application, which started killing the SMS a few years ago.
Summing Up
Just like SMS, the new messaging standard is programmed to work transversely diverse carrier networks. But it will be up to mobile companies to allow the service. Let us wait for this new messaging application but if you have some more information then, feel to share with us.
